André Arends

André Arends (1961, the Netherlands) is a versatile musician, composer, sound artist, and researcher (Theatre Studies and Sound Studies), with a special interest in arts and disabilities. He sees it as his mission to show the power, skills and possibilities of people with disabilities and more specific to empower people with visual and auditory impairments through the arts (dance and sound) and research. The world of people with congenital deafblindness was the central theme of his longitudinal practised based research project called Nightwalking started in 2007, in which he collaborated with choreographers like Jack Gallagher, Emio Greco, Nadja Raszewski, dancers from Bodies Anonymous, ICK Amsterdam, and TanzTangente Berlin. Arends is currently also affiliated with the University of Groningen, where he researches the impact of recorded speech in electronic music, sound art, and media.
